Prof. Arie Zaban, flanked by Board of Trustees Chairman Michael Jesselson and Council of Trustees Chairman Dr. Lipa Meir, was presented with a scroll upon his installation as eighth president of Bar-Ilan University. In his inaugural speech Prof. Zaban outlined the five pillars that will serve as the basis of BIU's mission over the coming years: achieving higher international ranking, establishing multidisciplinary "Impact Centers," revitalizing and modernizing academic instruction, expanding international activities, and transforming the university into the most relevant, diverse, lively, and exciting academic center of Judaism in Israel and the world. Torah-Reading Customs in Diverse Jewish Communities

Ever since Ezra the Scribe introduced the regular, public practice of Torah reading (5th century BCE), Kriat haTorah has been a key component of communal Jewish worship. Following a set procedure dating back some 2000 years to the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, the Torah has been read in synagogues around the globe thrice weekly and on Jewish holidays.

In a newly published book, BIU's Rabbi Dr. Haim Talbi sheds light on Torah-reading customs in Jewish communities in Germany, France, Italy, Yemen, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, Syria, India, and other places. Read More »
