Maximilian "Bud" Goode:

"Father of Computer Sports Analysis" Leaves BIU A Bequest to Save Lives

Maximilian Goode
The late Bud Goode

What do Groucho Marx, Art Linkletter, computer sports analysis and Bar-Ilan University have in common? They all benefitted from one remarkable man — Bud Goode.

Considered by many the "father" of computer sports analysis, Bud lived his entire life in the Los Angeles area but left a significant portion of his estate to Bar-Ilan University in Israel when he passed away on November 16, 2010.

His achievements were the stuff of legends. Bud served as a sharpshooter in the U.S. Navy and fought in the battle of Guadalcanal. After the war and a degree from Occidental College in Psychology and Statistics, he entered show business and was the associate producer of the Groucho Marx Show, "You Bet Your Life." He booked all of the guests on that long running raucous 50's show. Later, he filled the same role on the Art Linkletter Show, "People are Funny" and "House Party" and developed a life-long friendship with that television icon who died this past year at the age of 97.

But Bud's real passion was statistics, and he was the first practitioner in the United States to be paid to analyze professional football through the computer in the early 60's. From 1963 to 1971, his column "Bud Goode Computer Corner on Sports" was featured in 36 newspapers including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and Los Angeles Herald Examiner. At the time, he had 21 of the 28 NFL teams as his clients.

Though he had never been to Israel, Bud always admired the scientific accomplishments of that small country. That's why his bequest will be used for stem cell research at Bar-Ilan University. It is a field he believed holds the answers to human disease. "I think we can save so many people and preserve the quality of their lives," said Bud on many occasions.
