Rabbi Woolf explores historic context for Hamas goal to destroy Israel during Bergen County, NJ lecture
During a period when thousands of missiles were being launched at Israel by Hamas, Rabbi Jeffrey Woolf, senior lecturer in the Talmud Department of Bar-Ilan University, provided a lunch and learn gathering in Bergen County, NJ with greater insights as to why Hamas will never willingly end this battle against what they perceive to be the "infidel." According to Woolf, who spoke at the offices of the Cross River Bank in Fort Lee on July 22nd, Hamas views the ongoing attack against Israel as part of Islam's divine mandate to spread Islam everywhere around the world. This event was hosted by Drew Parker and the American Friends of Bar-Ilan University.
Rabbi Woolf cited the insights of "great historian", Professor Bernard Lewis, who views the "West's paternalistic view of Islam" as laying the seeds for the Islamic resurgence. Woolf said that few if any western countries think of going to war except for reasons of national or personal interest, feeling that conflicts can be negotiated. "Muslims, such as the Hamas and their supporters do not fight for 'interests.' They fight and struggle as part of 'jihad' because they believe that it is the will of God," said Woolf.
He said the bottom line is that Muslim Law vehemently denies the right of Jews to possess a sovereign nation on land that, in its opinion, belongs to the 'House of Islam' (Dar al-Islam). Woolf added, "It the belief of Hamas that it is the God given right and obligation of Muslims to destroy the infidel (kafir) - Jewish usurpers who live in that state, unless they surrender and return to a subordinate position as 'protected people' (dhimmi)." He explained that this shows that Islam is more than just a religion to its adherents – it's a political system that requires conquest of the "infidels."
Woolf added that Hamas views Israel and its allies of Satan, an equation which lies behind the nefarious anti-Semitism of the Muslim press, educational systems and propaganda. He added that this position is shared by Muslims the world over, who dream of the establishment of the Kingdom of God on Earth under "Sharia" Law. Rabbi Woolf said this makes for an extremely challenging enemy for Israel because according to Islam anyone who is killed in the struggle is rewarded by God. "It is a sublime vision of Islam that is absolutely non-negotiable," said Woolf.
