Bar-Ilan Research Brings New Shingles Drug Closer to Reality

In what promises to be a major breakthrough in the treatment of shingles, scientists at Bar-Ilan University have been the first to recreate the dormant/active behavior of the varicella zoster virus (VZV), which causes chicken pox, the first time that such re-activation has been achieved in a laboratory environment. The Israeli start-up company Phinergy is relying on technology developed by Bar-Ilan University's Prof. Arie Zaban to create an affordable, longer-lasting Aluminum-Air Battery for electric cars. Prof. Zaban, Director of BIU's Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, and his team are partnering with Phinergy to change the base on which the battery itself operates through the contact of aluminum with oxygen and water. Bar-Ilan Professor Is Designing Powerful Batteries To Power Unmanned Aircraft And Cars

Award-winning Chemistry Prof. Doron Aurbach, Director of the Nano Cleantech Center at the Bar-Ilan Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials (BINA), is designing rechargeable high energy density batteries that will power unmanned aircraft and motor vehicles. Bar-Ilan Researcher Gets FDA OK For Gaucher Disease Drug

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved an enzyme replacement therapy for the long-term treatment of people with Type 1 Gaucher disease, which was developed by Dr. David Aviezer and colleagues at Protalix BioTherapeutics. Dr. Aviezer is an adjunct researcher/senior lecturer in BIU's Mina and Everard Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences and CEO of Protalix. Read more...
