Bar-Ilan Medical School in the Galilee Holds First “White Coat” Ceremony

Two Med Students

Fifty-four students from the Faculty of Medicine in the Galilee donned medical white coats at a first-of-its kind ceremony symbolizing the transition to the clinical phase of their studies. Over the past few weeks these young doctors-to-be have begun their work in various hospitals throughout the northern region of the country.

Common in many medical schools throughout the world, the white coat ceremony is intended to create a psychological, spiritual and moral bond with the medical profession and promote empathy towards patients. Read more »

A Family Of Doctors Closes An Exciting Circle

When Roni Rahav attended a recent white coat ceremony, together with 123 of her friends from the first graduating class of the Bar-Ilan University Faculty of Medicine in Safed, she had difficulty holding back tears.

The historic opening of the initial site of the Bar-Ilan University Faculty of Medicine in the Galilee — located in the city of Safed — marks the beginning of a new era in healthcare services in northern Israel. The opening of the Bar-Ilan University medical school was marked by a festive ceremony in the presence of the President of Israel, Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and other noted guests.

Faced by a nationwide shortage of physicians and the need to upgrade medical services and infrastructure in the north, the Israeli government designated the establishment of a new medical school as a national priority initiative. Bar-Ilan University was chosen by the government to open the nation’s fifth medical school — and first in the Galilee. Read more »

To mark the occasion, Prime Minister (and formally health minister) Binyamin Netanyahu convened the whole cabinet at the site of the temporary medical faculty campus and greeted President Shimon Peres, who in the past, as minister for the development of the Negev and Galilee, pushed for the opening of such an institution. The Historic Launch Of A Medical School In Safed

Jerusalem Post, October 29, 2011: The opening today of Bar-Ilan University’s new medical school in Safed is a milestone event in the history of the State of Israel and the Jewish people. How will this medical school differ from Israel’s others? First, in its location. Second, in its innovative character. Read Prof. Moshe Kaveh’s Op Ed article »
